These things lead to distracted driving accidents

Distracted driving is a significant problem in Maryland and across the country. One does not have to be on the road for very long to see at least one person who is simply not paying attention when behind the wheel. Distracted driving accidents happen every single day, and it is the following things that lead to these events.

Cognitive, visual and manual distractions are behind numerous auto and auto versus pedestrian collisions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in the year 2013, approximately 424,000 people suffered injuries in accidents caused by distracted drivers, and well over 3,000 people died in such events. Sadly, those numbers have not changed much over the years.

What are cognitive, visual and manual distractions? Cognitive distractions are anything that takes a person's mind off driving -- such as talking to passengers or talking on the phone, listening to music or podcasts, and thinking about various things one has to do at work or at home. Visual distractions are anything that takes an individual's eyes off of the road -- such as looking at a cell phone, GPS system or other electronics in the car, staring out at passing scenery, or checking on one's children in the back seat. Finally, manual distractions are anything that takes a person's hands off of the wheel -- such as hands-on texting, eating, drinking, adjusting electronics and reaching for various objects.

Driving is a dangerous affair. One would think people would take it more seriously than they do, but they just do not, and others pay the price for it. Those who have been injured or lost loved ones in distracted driving accidents in the state of Maryland may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses through legal means. Legal counsel can review the details of one's case and assist in filing, negotiation and/or litigating the matter if doing so is deemed appropriate, in an effort to help one achieve monetary damages.
