Compassionate Guidance, Fearless Representation

Did a distracted driver cause you to suffer a spinal cord injury?

It is impossible to drive anywhere in Maryland without seeing another driver not paying attention to the road. Distracted drivers are everywhere and they are responsible for far too many people suffering serious injuries -- such as spinal cord injuries. Anyone who has suffered catastrophic injuries due to the actions of a distracted driver may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses.

Spinal cord injuries most often occur in car accidents. According to the Mayo Clinic, auto collisions are actually the number one cause of such injuries in the United States. Why? All it takes to injure the spinal cord is a swift, hard blow to the back -- which commonly occurs in car crashes. This can cause the vertebrae to shatter, dislocate or compress, ligaments to tear or detach and disks to bulge -- among a number of other things.

Most people automatically think of paralysis when they think of spinal cord injuries. Yes, some people will experience permanent or temporary paralysis after such an injury, but others will experience various other symptoms they may not realize are indicative of a spinal cord injury. Some of these symptoms are:

  • Pain in the neck and/or back
  • Weakness
  • Numbness in hands and/or feet
  • Balance difficulties
  • Inability to control one's bowels and/or bladder
  • Loss of sensation

When permanent damage is done, one's life will forever be changed. Those with spinal cord injuries may struggle to care for themselves or their families, they may be unable to work and/or they may be unable to enjoy life as they once did. In other words, a lot is taken away from someone when a spinal cord injury occurs. When a distracted driver causes someone to suffer all of this and more, the victim may seek compensation for his or her losses by pursuing legal claims in a Maryland civil court. With the assistance of counsel, fair and full compensation can be sought through negotiation or litigation if necessary.
