Distractions are everywhere in your vehicle: your cell phone, crashes on the side of the road and even things inside your vehicle.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that distracted driving causes close to 3,500 fatalities. What makes distracted driving dangerous and how can you avoid distractions when driving.
Types of distractions
According to the CDC, there are three categories of distracted driving. Cognitive (taking the mind off of driving), visual (looking at something other than the road) and manual (hands off of the wheel) distractions take a driver’s attention of the wheel and increase the possibility of a crash.
- Cognitive: Daydreaming, falling asleep at the wheel or thinking about something else other than the road are all included in cognitive driving distractions.
- Visual: Looking at a distraction on the side of the road or looking down at your phone are both examples of visual distractions.
- Manual: Keeping your phone in your hand, eating, changing the radio station and reaching to grab something from another seat are all ways that you can manually distract yourself from driving.
How to focus more on the road
Any way that you can avoid cognitive, visual or manual distractions will help you avoid an accident. Keeping your phone out of reach, stopping to eat instead of eating while driving and making sure you have everything you need well within your reach may aid in keeping your mind and eyes on the road, as well as hands on the wheel.
